Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a relatively common viral infection that weakens a cat's immune system, making them more susceptible to infections and diseases, especially as they get older. Cats with FIV can live long, healthy lives with the right care.

Although we encourage separation between FIV+ and non FIV cats, the transmission rate in a household with cats that get along is only 2%. FIV is only transmitted between cats through deep bite wounds.

Tips for taking care of your FIV+ cat

  • Create a safe environment: Make sure your home is a safe and comfortable space for your FIV-positive cat.

  • Keep them indoors: It's very important to keep FIV-positive cats indoors to minimise the risk of infections and transmission.

  • Regular vet care: Schedule regular, at least twice-yearly, check-ups with your vet to monitor your cat's health.

  • Provide a balanced diet: Give your cat a nutritious and balanced diet to support their immune system and include fish oil. Consult your vet for guidance on the best diet for an FIV-positive cat.

  • Reduce stress: Minimise stress in your cat's life as it can weaken their immune system. Create a calm environment, establish a comfortable routine, and provide plenty of affection, playtime, and mental stimulation.

  • Watch for symptoms: Pay attention to any changes in your cat's behaviour, appetite, or physical condition. Early detection and treatment of any issues can greatly improve the well-being of FIV-positive cat.

  • Consider companionship: FIV-positive cats can happily live with other FIV-positive cats or cats vaccinated against FIV.

  • Raise awareness: Educate others about adopting FIV cats, dispel misconceptions, and advocate for these cats to find loving homes.
